(about Gideon's army) Like the pitchers that held the torches, our bodies are weak and fragile, yet they hold the fire of the Holy Spirit. That fire burns in us waiting to be released so that others can see it. The light was released when the pitchers were broken. Sometimes we need to be broken to release the light in us. Our weakness allows the light of God to be seen. Teresa Schultz
About This Quote

The author of the Book of Judges is describing the characteristics of the Israelites in his time. The image of pitchers is a popular one in Scripture. The name for this book in Hebrew means “the pitchers.” Early on, the Lord told Moses that He would deliver them into the hand of their enemies, but that He would not destroy them (see Deuteronomy 28:64). The Lord gave them a plan: He would make a nation of them and give it a land to which they could belong.

When the nation of Israel failed to obey God’s plan, He sent out Gideon and his army to deliver them from their enemies. After he did so, he was rewarded with great power from God. In this way, we see how brokenness prepares us to release the light of God’s presence in our lives.
